Overview
Walk into the old Kingdom of Lo, a high desert of red cliffs, cave dwellings and walled Lo Manthang, which lies in the Himalayan rain shadow.
Upper Mustang keeps a culture closely linked to Tibet, with old monasteries and the walled city of Lo Manthang. Because it lies in the rain shadow, it is one of the few treks that also works in the monsoon.
The route crosses a series of windy passes around 3,800 m. Altitude is moderate, but sun, wind and dust make for tiring days. Roads now reach many villages, so some of the old trail is shared with vehicles.
A restricted area permit and a licensed guide are required. The permit is among Nepal's most expensive.
