Overview
A long camping journey into one of Nepal's most remote regions, past turquoise Phoksundo Lake and old Bon and Buddhist monasteries.
Upper Dolpo is a high, dry land north of the Himalaya with a culture close to Tibet's. It is famous for Phoksundo Lake and Shey Gompa, and it is one of the country's most demanding journeys.
The route crosses Kang La, whose height is variously listed between about 5,150 and 5,360 m. Full camping support is needed, and the trip is a serious commitment.
A restricted area permit, national park permit and licensed guide are required, and it is among Nepal's most expensive permits.
