Overview
Visit the birthplace of the Buddha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a sacred garden and monasteries built by many nations.
Lumbini, in the plains of southern Nepal, is one of Buddhism's most important pilgrimage sites. The Maya Devi Temple marks the Buddha's birthplace, near the pillar raised by Emperor Ashoka.
Monasteries from many countries stand in the wider Lumbini Development Zone. Tilaurakot, linked to the old Shakya kingdom, makes a good extra visit.
Summers here are very hot, so autumn and winter are the best times. Dress modestly at sacred sites.
